Michael Allen Mead

August 20, 1949 — May 12, 2018

Michael Allen Mead, age 68, passed on Saturday, May 12, 2018, from an extended illness.

Mike was born in Columbus, August 20, 1949, and spent his entire life there.

He was preceded in death by mother, Edna May Mead; father, Robert Mead; and brother Daniel Mead, as well as grandparents, aunts, and uncles. His long-time friend, roommate, and partner of 52 years, Franklin; his cousins, Sue Harley (Tom) and Nancy Wagner (Richard); and many other cousins and friends will miss him beyond description. Michael earned his B.S Degree in math education from The Ohio State University and was a faculty member there, where he did computer statistical analysis and experimental design for vocational education research projects. His work was published several times in international professional journals.

He moved to only his second job at the Ohio EPA, where he worked and was promoted as Chief of the Office of Data & Systems. He oversaw the development and maintenance for the entire Agency's computerized data systems, processed permitting, monitored and enforced data, assisted other offices in acquiring and using new computer software and equipment, and did long-term planning for information resources. Before becoming Chief, Michael managed the programming and analysis section. And, he was responsible for the Ohio EPA's geographic information system. Mike retired in 2003. Outside of work, Mike showed tremendous talents as musician, stage manager, actor, and director of many productions for the former Columbus group, "Players Theatre." He spent countless hours working to present the public high-quality productions with rave reviews. To hear him play the piano was a special treat for all who listened. He enjoyed going to many types of theater productions and concerts. He had a great sense of humor, was mischievous, and was sometimes willful but always honest. He put his whole heart into everything he did. He truly was a good person, and he lived to make his partner and friends happy with his generosity, affection, and cooking skills. His life meant so much to those who know him. The emptiness felt cannot be measured. In lieu of flowers, please contribute in Mike's memory to theater groups he enjoyed such as Otterbein, Short North Stage, CAPA, Gahanna-Lincoln HS, and Columbus Gay Men's Chorus.

Donations to Stonewall would help young LGBTQ people struggling with sexual orientation, gender identity, thoughts of suicide, and other issues.
