Michael August Schad, a venerable spirit who graced this world for 98 remarkable years, passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2025, following a prolonged illness. Born on July 31, 1927, in Plainview, Minnesota, Michael was the eldest of eleven siblings, a testament to both the tenacity and fortitude that marked his journey through life. He was the cherished son of Christian and Catherine Schad, who laid a foundation of strength and resilience that he carried throughout his years.

At the age of eighteen, driven by an indomitable spirit of service, he joined the Air Force, where he honed his skills as an Air Traffic Controller, stationed at various locations around the globe. His commitment to duty was further exemplified during his service in the Korean War, where courage and camaraderie underscored his experiences.

In 1951, Michael exchanged vows with the love of his life, Margaret MacNeil, hailing from the picturesque Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Their union, a beautiful tapestry woven from shared dreams and unwavering affection, flourished for an extraordinary 72 years until Marge’s passing on October 9, 2023. Together, they built a life rich in love and adventure.

After dedicating 22 years to military service, Michael transitioned into civilian life as the Tower Chief at Bolton Field, where his profound expertise as a flight instructor and corporate pilot emerged. Logging over 17,000 hours in the skies, he lived out his passion for aviation with exceptional grace and dedication. Beyond aviation, Michael found solace in the embrace of nature as a passionate gardener, cultivating beauty in both his garden and the lives of those around him. He also cherished the camaraderie found in visiting the Time Zone, where laughter, friendship, and a cold beer intertwined seamlessly in the fabric of his daily life.

Michael is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marge; his son Steve; son-in-law Terry Gebert; and dear nephews Blair and John. He is also mourned by his cherished brothers Bernard, Christian, and John, as well as his sisters Loretta, Jeanine, Suzanne, and Catherine.

He leaves behind a legacy rich in love and cherished memories, survived by his loving daughters, Barbara (Ken), Helen, and Diane; his brother Tom; and his daughter-in-law Teresa. Michael took considerable pride in his grandchildren—Josh, Kendra, Cody, Dustin, Michael, and Adam—and found joy in the laughter of his great granddaughter, Scarlet. His family tree flourishes further through many beloved nieces and nephews who carry forward his spirit.

In these tender moments of remembrance, the family extends profound gratitude to the wonderful neighbors—Stan and Ray Bricker, along with Matt and Nikki O'Bryan—whose kindness and support enriched Michael’s life during his final years.

As we celebrate the life of Michael August Schad, we remember a man whose legacy transcends the air he navigated and the earth he tended. His journey may have concluded, but the essence of his love, bravery, and dedication will forever linger in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
