Peter MacDowell Barnett, born on July 2, 1941, passed away on August 13, 2025.

Peter began his professional career after earning his Ph.D. in Art History from Harvard University. He was a professor at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, where he inspired his students with his passion for art and art history. Later in his career, he utilized his analytical skills as a systems analyst with MassMutual Life Insurance Company.

An accomplished artist, Peter created beautiful landscapes and portraits that will live on forever. His artistic talents also included a love for music and he found joy in singing and playing the guitar during open mic nights. His artistic outreach included community theater and leadership for many years in the Monson Arts Council in Monson, Massachusetts.

Peter is survived by his loving wife, Chase Barnett, his devoted children, Shelley Barnett, Jessica Barnett, Joe (Michelle) Barkson, and Carl (Lindsey) Barkson, sisters Deb (Bill Kenerson) Venman, Mary Barnett and Wendy (Patrick) Barnett-Mulligan. He was a proud grandfather to Peter, Eric, Otis, Felix, Cooper, Cammie, Carter, Myles, Elliott, and Reese, who will all remember him fondly. He is also survived by many extended family members.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Barbara Barnett, his brother, Stephen Barnett and brother-in-laws, Bill Kenerson and Patrick Barnett-Mulligan. His legacy of creativity, dedication to education, and love for family will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the World Wildlife Fund or the American Red Cross.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 11 at 11:00am at Studio 9 at Porches Inn, North Adams, MA. The burial will be private.
