Philip E. Miller

December 20, 1940 — April 27, 2025

Philip (Phil) E. Miller, age 84, was called home to our Lord on Sunday, April 27, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully in his Columbus home with his family by his side.

Phil was born on December 20, 1940, in Gallipolis, OH, to Clayton and Kate Miller. He was a 1958 graduate of Gallia Academy and 1967 graduate of THE Ohio State University, with a degree in accounting. He proudly served in the Navy from 1960-1964 and lived the rest of his life demonstrating their core values of “honor, courage, and commitment.” Phil had a strong work ethic and spent most of his career as a utility consultant but enjoyed working for Ohio Valley Bank in the final years of his employment until he officially “retired.”

He married the love of his life, Sue, on December 29, 1963 and they raised four children together. He cherished her, faithfully provided for her, accompanied her around town to as many events and restaurants as they could manage in a week, and kept her on time. They left a legacy of love and commitment for all who had the privilege of watching them together.

Phil’s top priority in his life was Jesus and his humble devotion to Him was evident to all. It was his aim to love and serve Him with all his heart, soul, mind, and strength. He had a way of meekly sharing the love and teachings of Jesus with everyone he met and making everyone feel special. Phil was a former deacon and youth leader at Immanuel Baptist Church for over 40 years, where he mentored and impacted the lives of countless teens and their families. He was most presently a member at Covenant Church in Grove City, in which he served as their finance team leader, secretary of the elder/leadership team, and was one of their most beloved greeters.

Phil was known for his dedication to his community and left a huge imprint all around the Columbus and Grove City areas. As the PA announcer at Franklin Heights for several different sports for over 30 years, he befriended more families than could be counted. He also served in various committees, booster clubs, and sports leagues in multiple schools through out the community.

Without a doubt, Phil’s greatest treasures were his 4 children, 18 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren! He tried to support them in as many of their activities as possible, even if that meant traveling across the country. But he also enjoyed evenings at home with them, just playing games or watching sports. You could often even find him accompanying his grandchildren on a late night ice cream or Waffle House run! Besides spending time with his family and friends, Phil had a passion for coffee and then more coffee, maintaining the best lawn in the neighborhood, fighting for the Euchre championship belt, THE Ohio State Buckeyes, desserts of any kind and after every meal, all things financial, making post office runs, being the Golden Voice of the Falcons, and managing us all.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David (Judy) Miller, and his most precious daughter Penny Hoffman. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Sue; brother, Richard (Jane) Miller; sister, Catherine (Jerry) Schafer; children, Polly (Tim) Baltzer, Jamie (Gretchen) Miller, and Katie May; son-in-law, Dustin Hoffman; grandchildren Clayton (Rachel), Philip, Matthew (Madie), Anna, Micah Baltzer; Kaylee, Carter, Lydia, Abraham, Clark, Edison, Bella, Rosalie Hoffman; Tori, Isabelle, Macie Miller; and Mikayla and Isaac (Amelia) May; great grandchildren, Josiah and Nathaniel Baltzer and Elsie May; “adopted” daughters, Teresa Hoffman and Karen Lovett; “adopted” grandson, Ryan Ott, as well as many other special family and friends.
