Reverend Hazel Boyd, on Monday, December 8, 2014, departed this life surrounded by her family at bedside. Hazel was born on September 8, 1925 to the late Marion and Lennie Barnett.
Hazel Boyd was a member of Sigsbee Avenue Church of God in Columbus, OH under the late pastor Edward Bridges. Later she received her first ordination under the late Reverend Raymond S. Jackson, of Detroit, MI. Hazel was involved in the prison ministry where she rehabilitated men and women back into society. Reverend Hazel broke down barriers for other women ministers to teach and preach the gospel by bringing together different denominations. Hazel was an entrepreneur owning her own salon and co-owned Boyd's Ashland Oil in the Linden area with her late husband O.C. Colleges attended: Anderson University, Columbus State, and The Ohio State University. Hazel was appointed area commissioner by Mayor Tom Moody and Governor Richard Celeste on the beautification of north Linden. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Westerville, OH and was also awarded in 2004-2005 in the Who's Who International.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, O.C. Boyd; 6 brothers; and 5 sisters.
She is survived by her 6 beautiful daughters, Hilda Johnson, Delores Johnson, Virgileen Nesby, Swayzene (Elvren) Talley, Crystal Alshawa, and Denna (Robert Sr.) Gooch, all of Columbus, OH; extended special daughters, Sharron Kornegay and Dorethea Ingram; 14 grandchildren, Guy (Dawn) Horton, Tia Horton, Monnie White, Macquinta Talley, Virnika Nesby, Chana Sow, Chad (Monika) Talley, Chan (Amanda) Johnson, Yavin Alshawa, Reyna Gooch, and Jay Brands ; 15 great-grandchildren; 9 great great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Christine Nesbitt of Tennessee, Vera Hedrick, Kathleen Holmes, and Delores Boyd all of Columbus, OH; brothers-in-law, Odell (Lennie) Boyd and Jerry Arnold of Tennessee; a host of nieces and nephews, and special nephews, Pastor George Jordan and Aubrey Arnold; and special friends, Pearlie Bourne, Gladys Hayes, and Minister Ronald and Marie Betton.
Family will receive friends on Friday, December 12, 2014, from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, NE Chapel, 3047 E. Dublin-Granville Rd. Columbus, OH 43231. A visitation will be on Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 9:00am-10:00am at First Church of God, 3480 Refugee Rd., Columbus, OH 43232 followed by her Home Going Service at 10:00am. She will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Please leave a message of condolence for the family during this difficult time.
