Richard L. Spinneweber

October 19, 1938 — December 19, 2019

Richard Lee Spinneweber, age 81, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19th, 2019 at Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital. He was born on October 19th, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Richard was raised in Pittsburgh and graduated in 1957 from Carrick high school. Richard, also known as: "Rich, Spinny, Uncle Pinky, Dick, and Old Man Spinny," was a genuine man of earth and nature that most would agree would have fit in better as a pioneer 100 years ago.

Richard was a loving: father, grandfather, great grandfather, godfather, uncle, brother and friend. Richard was an avid hunter & craftsman who loved to canoe, fish, hunt and generally spend time outdoors. Our home was known as the "Brookfield Zoo," with Spinny showing off and teaching others about animals and nature.

He especially cherished each of his dogs who were always faithfully hovering by his side. Richard was a skilled: taxidermist, baker, gardener and fish breeder. After personally crafting an addition with a log cabin basement in his home of 50+ years he focused on fishing and camping with his five children and x wife Joann of 25 years. He worked for 15 years at Seagrams Distillery and 15 years at Jess Howard Electric Company, followed by 10 years at COB construction company.

After retirement he enjoyed traveling, especially out west to explore the mountains, and trying to fulfill his dream to breed fish at home. Richard will be remembered fondly for his creative, dry-sense of humor, unique behaviors, generous spirit and well-known for his unconditional spirit to LITERALLY attempt to give the shirt off his back to other people in need.

He was known for his kindness, helpfulness, growing produce and baking to give to neighbors and friends.

He is preceded in death by his daughter: Nancy Boldon; parents: Peggy and Walter Spinneweber, sister: Lois Rollinson & brothers: Walter Spinneweber & Raymond Spinneweber.

He is survived by his children; Bonnie Godbout, Joseph Spinneweber, Mark Spinneweber, Jenny (Spinneweber) and Bill Doehla, and ex-wife Joann Spinneweber; Grandchildren: Kristin, Katelyn, Nicholas, Emily, Sophia, DJ, Whitnie, Joseph, Jacob, Caleb, Ryder and Miles; Great-grandchildren: Caden, Grayson, Rowen, Blake, Carter and Nora; Siblings: Carol, Thomas and Micki, in addition to several nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

We all knew Richard was stubborn, but never knew the depths of his will to live and power to fight until we watched him battle over 6 types of cancer throughout the past decade.

Finally, one of his last requests was: "I want my grandkids to remember and LOVE ME JUST THE WAY I WAS."

A visitation will be held on Friday, December 27, 2019 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - North East Chapel, with a service Saturday, December 28, 2019 from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at St. Anthony Catholic Parish, 1300 Urban Drive, Columbus, OH 43229.
