Robert L. "Bob" West, age 71, passed away unexpectedly on June 9, 2017 at Doctors Hospital West. He was born in Parkersburg, WV at St. Joseph Hospital on September 30, 1945 to the late Leon and Wayvelene West.
He spent his childhood in various areas of southeastern Ohio, including Buckeye Lake and Adamsville, before his parents settled on the south side of Columbus in the early 1950's. Bob is a 1964 South High Alumni. After graduation he held various jobs including the railroad, Sandy's restaurant, and a brief stint at Westinghouse. In 1966 he joined the Franklin County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Earl O. Smith and retired 33 years later. He was the youngest deputy every hired, the youngest patrol officer, and Franklin County Sheriff's first homicide detective. After retirement he was a patrol officer for Franklin Township Police Department for 7 years at which time he started working at Battelle Memorial Institute in the security department for the next 13 years. During his working life Bob made many friends, served his community with distinction, and influenced many lives with his kindness, wit, and common sense. Following his last retirement Bob became a snowbird, with a home in Grove City and Punta Gorda, FL. In addition Bob was a Shriner over 30 years, and member of FOP Capital City Lodge.
Bob is survived by his beloved fiancée Cheryl Schrack; sisters Linda (John) Glenn, and Judy (Richard) Joyner; brother Dan (Margie) West; John and Dan Hawk, as well as numerous extended family and friends.
Visitations will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, on Tuesday June 13, 2017 from 5-8pm and Wednesday June 14, 2017 9-11am. A Service will be held following visitation on Wednesday June 14, 2017 at 11am. Burial will follow at New Lebanon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Junction City. Services to be officiated by his uncle, Reverend Bob Ray. Donations may be made in Bob's memory to the American Cancer Society.
