Roberta Kirk Chafins

God called Roberta, (Bertie) who was born at Willie Kirk Branch at Lowney WV to Alice (Vance) Kirk and Earl Kirk. Home on August 25, 2026 at Ohio Health Hospice in Columbus, OH. She was a devout Christian. She tragically lost her mother just days before her 10th birthday.

She met her future husband Earl Chafins in 1954 while walking up the dirt road in Lowney from Church. They married at the Mingo County Court House on July 9, 1955. Moving to Columbus, OH later that year, where a year later their son Earl Jr. was born.

She loved music, she played guitar. Song writing was a gift, along with many other crafts, A song she wrote was recorded by friends they had come to know the Goins Brothers. She was a seamstress, a quiltmaker, an impeccable cook. Her Chicken and Dumplings, fried chicken, and that banana pudding with real meringue. There was many Appalachian talents she shared with us.

She is predeceased by her parents Earl Kirk and Alice Kirk, as well as stepmother Hazel. Brothers Edgar Lee, and Thomas Kirk. Sisters Carrie Mae and Linda Jean Kirk. Grandson Mark Hite, Jr and Son in law Mark Hite Sr.

She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years Earl Chafins, sons Earl Jr; Robert (Lisa), Randy (Tina), and loving daughter Janice Hite. Along with niece Christine Kirk who she raised, and was with her at time of her death. Three sisters Naomi Kirk, Edna Stewart, Bessie Curley, and brother Cecil Kirk. Special niece Daphne. Many sisters in law and brothers in law who she loved dearly.

Grandchildren Harrison Hite, Meshelle (Aaron) Cloud, Elizabeth Hite, Jodi (Richard) Bensema, Randall Chafins, Jr, Sara (Elliott W) Chafins, Michael Chafins, Shawn Chafins, Robyn Chafins. 23 Great Grandchildren and 7 Great Great Grandchildren. And her special fur baby Dusty.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the Newcomer Funeral Home, SW Chapel, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio (614-539-6166), where funeral services will then be held on Friday, September 1, 2026 at 10:00am. Interment to follow at Fernwood Cemetery. Pastor Rick Baldwin officiating.
