Ruth Hammond, 98, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at the The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Ruth was born on May 28, 1916 in Holmes County, Ohio to Bertha M. (Spreng) and Earl P. Alexander. She was married to Ralph B. Hammond on September 30, 1942. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert Campbell and his wife, Norma Jean, stepson Carl Hammond and his wife Anna Mae, and stepson-in-law, George Prefling.
Ruth is survived by son, Glenn Hammond of Newark, OH; stepdaughter, Eileen Prefling of Ashland, OH; and sister, Esther Jeffries of Canton, OH. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, and 3 nieces.
Ruth was a cafeteria worker for the Loudonville-Perrysville (OH) Schools, a medical assistant to Dr. Glenn Paisley in Loudonville, OH, and a Licensed Practical Nurse for Kettering Hospital in Loudonville, OH and Mansfield (OH) General Hospital. In 1995, Ruth retired from the nursing profession and moved to Lawton, OK, where she lived on her own and had her most favorite "job" – performing volunteer work for the Lawton Public Library – a job which she drove herself to and from on an almost daily basis. She volunteered until she could no longer drive and in 2011, moved to Columbus, OH where she lived with her son, then later as a resident of First Community Village. Ruth was a longtime member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Perrysville, OH and Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Lawton, OK.
The family wishes to thank and will be forever grateful to the wonderful and loving caregivers at First Community Village in Columbus, OH, as well as the exceptional medical professionals in The Ohio State University Medical Center's MICU unit.
In keeping with Ruth's wishes, there will be no calling hours or formal funeral services. Arrangements have been entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home in Columbus. Messages of condolence may be left at www.NewcomerColumbus.com.
The family is planning to host a Celebration Of Life in Ruth's honor on a date and location to be determined at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made in Ruth's name to the Lawton Public Library, 110 SW 4th Street, Lawton, OK 73501.
