Sarah I. Chole

July 31, 1931 — August 18, 2020

Sarah Isabelle Chole (McMahon)
7/3/1931 - 8/18/2020

Sarah Isabelle McMahon departed this world early Tuesday morning. She was born on July 3, 1931, to Kenneth and Mary Christine McMahon of Austintown. She resided in Columbus for over 25 years after traveling the world with the United States Navy.

She is survived by four dedicated and loving children- Daniel, Tom (Donna), Karolyn, and Kathryn. She has four granddaughters- Amanda, Leah, Sarah, and Tiffani Chole- who live their lives every day with the strength and love she showed them. She was the second oldest of seven in a big Irish family. Siblings that adored her- Eleanor Higham (Richard), Kenneth McMahon, Marolyn Biscan (George), Christina Van Zandt (Bill), and Micheal McMahon. Along with many nieces and nephews who referred to her as "Aunt Sis".

She is preceded in death by her parents, beloved sister- Karolyn McMahon, and sister Hazel who passed at birth.

Sarah was a proud Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. After being told she could not attend college, she took matters into her own hands by joining the armed forces at 20. She was one of the first and only five Navy WAVES to attend the Aviation School of Medicine in Pensacola, Florida. She was one of the first three women in the history of the United States to be trained in the "Dilbert Dunker". She spent her career in the Navy flying from Hawaii, Japan, North Carolina, Germany, and many other places all over the world. She loved her "war buddies" and shared incredible stories about them. They called her by her nick-name "Sally".

Sarah was also an avid Buckeye fan. She was known to decorate her yard with Ohio State flags every Saturday. She spent almost every game with her namesake and granddaughter, Sarah Kathryn. We believe the announcement of the Big Ten football season being cancelled was enough for her to be fed up and say "alright, I'm outta here!"

Those who were blessed enough to cross paths with her say she changed their lives forever. She was a one-of-a-kind force of nature. With a contagious laugh, smart-attitude, and endless love for her family. She selflessly took care of everyone until the day God called her to heaven.

"May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in
the hollow of His hand."
