Sharon Ann Cleland

November 20, 1946 — June 14, 2025

Sharon Cleland (Fryer), of Washington Court House, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and dedication to both family and community.

Born on November 20, 1946, to Marion and Carolyn Fryer, she carried with her the strong values and quiet resilience shaped by her upbringing. She often spoke fondly of her father’s influence in her life and held dear the lessons learned from her family as she built a life centered on care, service, and dedication.

Sharon was a proud graduate of Washington High School, Class of 1964. She went on to study dietetics at The Ohio State University. Her dedication to learning continued well into her adult life, culminating in a master’s degree in 2000. For nearly three decades, Sharon served as a child nutrition consultant for the State Department of Education, working tirelessly to improve the well-being of children across Ohio.

Sharon's life was rich with creativity, warmth, and joy. She was a gifted cook and was well known for her delicious meals and numerous recipes, many of which she lovingly shared with family and friends. Her talents extended beyond the kitchen—she was an avid crafter who made handmade dolls, clothing, and holiday decorations. She loved Christmas and her gingerbread houses, adorned with stained glass candy windows, became family legends. Sharon also had a green thumb—her gardens were vibrant reflections of her nurturing spirit. She also had a deep love for all things tea—she delighted in collecting unique teapots and delicate cups, and loved sharing a warm cup of tea.

In her younger years, Sharon enjoyed camping with her family, often accompanying her husband to field trials with their beloved Brittany Spaniels. She embraced the experience fully—not just as a supportive partner, but as an excellent shot in her own right, earning the respect of those around her. Sharon loved traveling and went on many memorable vacations, including trips all over the US and Caribbean cruises. She shared two special European adventures—one with her grandson Skyler to Switzerland and another with her twin sister, Karen to the Netherlands. These trips were among her most treasured experiences. A true Ohio State football fan, Sharon rarely missed a game, her dedication to the Buckeyes lasting through the years—even when mobility became more difficult. One of the greatest thrills of her life was attending the 2003 Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, where she watched Ohio State’s legendary underdog victory over the undefeated University of Miami to win the national championship.

Sharon’s love for her family was the foundation of her life. She treated her children’s friends as her own, often shuttling them to fun activities and even taking them on vacation. She helped care for her grandchildren as they grew, showering them with affection, gifts, and stories. Her home was always filled with tall tales, laughter, and the comforting smell of something delicious in the oven. Her charisma and warmth made her a magnet for people of all ages, guiding Sunday school classes, youth groups, and 4-H clubs with the same energy she brought to every aspect of her life.

Sharon is preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Carolyn (Greeneisen) Fryer. She is survived by her devoted husband, Norman Cleland; her son, Tom Cleland, and daughter-in-law, Diana Cleland; her daughter, Amy Burchinal, and son-in-law, Jason Burchinal; and her cherished grandchildren, Skyler Cleland, Maya Burchinal, and Ethan Burchinal. She also leaves behind her twin sister, Karen Urban; her brother, George Fryer; her sister-in-law, Pam Rubenstahl, and Pam’s husband, Robert Rubenstahl; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends whose lives were touched by her kindness and warmth.

Sharon’s life was one of joy, generosity, and deep connection. Her legacy lives on in the memories she created, the meals she lovingly prepared, the lessons she taught, and the lives she touched.

A private celebration of Sharon’s life will be held by the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to ChildrensHungerAlliance.org in her name.
