Sterling Frank Chappell Iii

December 18, 1929 — July 9, 2017

S. Frank Chappell III, 87, of Columbus, Ohio, fulfilled his lifelong passion of serving the Lord on Sunday, July 9, 2017. He was born December 18, 1929, in Houston, Texas to S. Frank Chappell Jr. and Alice Chambers. He was the oldest of five siblings: Robert dec. (Marsha; Joyce dec.), Doratha (Jack dec.) Moore, Gregory (Janie dec.), and Lou Alice (Paul) Roden. He leaves behind 11 nieces and nephews. On August 31, 1957, he married Betty Jean Holland, of Pensacola, Florida. Together they had three children: Cheryl (David) Muir, David (Lori), and John; and two granddaughters: Allison Muir and Ashley.

He graduated from Abilene Christian College; enlisted in the Navy in 1951, serving as a pilot, and achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He then graduated with his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Texas. He started his oil industry career with Cities Service Company in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The application of his studies culminated into a 25 year-career with Ashland Chemical in Houston, Texas, which exposed him to much international travel and world experiences-including in 1971 relocating with his family from Houston to Worthington, Ohio. Following retirement, he obtained the licensure to sell securities with AmVest Securities, Inc.

His dedication to serving Christ was gratified by being appointed an elder in service at the Northland Church of Christ, a position he held for over 40 years. He was involved in the campus ministry, prison ministry, and the Ghanaian ministry. Among these he developed two special passions: retirement and healthcare services for aging Christians and the Russian ministry. He helped to found and develop Willow Brook Christian Communities, ultimately serving on the board for 44 years. In service of the Russian ministry he ventured there multiple times to establish a preaching school and support the spread of Christianity. He was renown for his master classes on Romans and Hebrews. Not everyone always agreed with him, but you always knew where he stood, and God used him in great ways.

The family will receive friends from 4-7pm, Friday, July 14, 2017 at the Northland Church of Christ, 4581 Cleveland Ave., Columbus, Oh., 43231, where the funeral service will be held at 10:00am, Saturday, July 15, 2017. Larry Harris officiating. Entombment at Kingwood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Willow Brook Christian Home, 55 Lazelle Rd, Columbus, OH, 43235.
