Steven J. Elrod, born on December 7, 1962, in Columbus, Ohio, passed away on May 6, 2026, at home, with his wife by his side. He lived a full and active life, marked by a strong dedication to service and a love for fun and family.
Steven graduated from Hilliard High School and went on to serve in the Air National Guard with the 160/121st Civil Engineering Squadron out of Rickenbacker International Airport for over 31 years. He held deep respect and appreciation for the men and women he served alongside during his military career. In addition to his military service, Steven worked for the United States Postal Service for more than 40 years, showing a lifetime commitment to his work and community.
Known as a jokester, Steven enjoyed telling dumb dad jokes that would bring smiles to those around him. He was also an avid runner, participating in many half marathons, 5Ks, and even one full marathon. Beyond running, he had a passion for motorsports, competing in over 100 demolition derbies and racing stock cars at Columbus Motor Speedway and Raceway 35.
Steven’s proudest accomplishments were his children, whom he cherished deeply. In his final months, he authored a children’s book, adding additional joy to the final chapter of his life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lynn Elrod; children, Heidi (Chris) Spittler, Steven Johnston, Ashley Gearheart, Kyle Johnston, Caleb Elrod, Emily Elrod, and Carissa (Joshua) Jewell; and grandchildren, Makena Jewell, Artorias Gearheart, Lance "LJ" Jewell, and Emry Jewell. Steven also leaves behind his mother, Jacqueline VanBibber; siblings Cheryl Elrod and Craig (Dawn) Elrod; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Steven was preceded in death by his brother, James Elrod, and his father, Charles W. Elrod.
His graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Scioto Burial Park in McDermott, Ohio where military honors will be rendered.
Steven J. Elrod will be remembered for his dedication, humor, and the joy he brought to his family and friends. His legacy lives on in those he loved so much.
