Theodore R. Tonn

Theodore R. "Ted" Tonn, a retired UPS executive and longtime resident of Alpharetta, GA, died peacefully at his Alpharetta home following an extended illness on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at the age of 80.
Ted is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Marion Weis Tonn; his sister, Marilyn Anne "Babe" Searcy (Harold); his sons, Ted Tonn (Barb), Bryon Tonn (Tina), Ronnie Tonn (Denise), Michael Tonn, David Tonn (Amy), Tom Tonn (Cathy), and Jeffrey Tonn; one daughter, Terri Mathis; his stepchildren, Richard Hamel and Patricia McLean; and his 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Theodore Tonn and Mabel Rose Tonn; his sister, Wanda June LaGrone; his stepson, Donald Hamel; and his grandson, Ryan Tonn.
Ted was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 10, 1940. He began his career working for his father's business, Chicago Oakman Garage, in Detroit before joining UPS as a mechanic, where he rose to become Vice President of Fleet Maintenance in the Corporate Automotive Department of UPS in Atlanta, Georgia. He retired in 2000 at age 60, having devoted 33 years to the company.
Ted met his wife Marion in Columbus, Ohio and they married in 1976. Together they raised their blended family of 11 children. Ted was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was known throughout his Alpharetta neighborhood as the resident handyman, able to tackle complicated projects around his home – and those of his neighbors – with exceptional ease, and always with kindness. Ted was a lover of cars – new and old- and an avid golfer. Ted will always be remembered for his deep generosity, humility, dry sense of humor, and gentle spirit; he will be deeply missed by Marion, his family, his friends, neighbors, and all those who knew him.
A visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1, 2020 from 6-8 at Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Rd, Roswell, Georgia. On Saturday, September 5, 2020, a visitation will be held in Grove City, Ohio at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio, from 10am-12pm, with the funeral service immediately following.
