Walter Carruthers, born the 8th of 12 children on May 3, 1941 in Atoka Tenn. and passed November 14, 2019.
Walter would tell stories of picking cotton and walking miles to and from school. Sneaking into fields eating watermelons, playing baseball, and boy did he love cars. He relocated to Columbus, Ohio where he finished his education by going to night school. Graduating from Central High School in 1969, then enrolling at Franklin University. He also studied karate for over 6 years achieving his 3rd degree brown belt. Joined Love Zion Baptist Church and Mason Lodge St. Marks #7.
Walter married Linda Leona Sandoval August 28th 1972 in Detroit MI. From this union came 5 children. Providing for his family he worked at Grandle Parking where he met Linda. He later studied for his CDL's and became a transit operator at Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) in May 1977, retired January 2007. He was also a member of Transport Workers Union, Local 208. When Walter was not driving the bus he stayed busy mowing yards. His hobbies were watching old western movies, Judge Judy, "Fixing" various items in the garage, and keeping up with the neighbors and their gossip.
Walter was confirmed Catholic at St. Augustine and Gabriel Church on Easter 1989 and was involved in Church activities. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #10284. Walter was known for his generous nature, his big smile, hard working attitude and his many catch phrases... "Going to see a man about a horse," and if you asked him how he was doing, he always said "Everything is all right."
Preceded by parents Simon Anderson Carruthers and Betty Mae Boyd, brothers Freddie Holiday and Simon Earnest Carruthers, sisters Shirley Carruthers, Bessie Turner, Annie Ruff and Lorine Fletcher.
He leaves to cherish his memories; wife of 47 years Linda, children; Walter Jr. (Bridget), Nathaniel, Ron (Kristy), Angela Tyler, Sarah Elizabeth Carruthers and step-daughter Renee Greenlee, 18 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, sisters; Rosie Shaw, Prudence Oliver, Darlene (Mayo) Saxton, Verdie Maynus, Betty T. Pinkney, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins/other relatives, friends, and Church family.
